Ambae (Vanuatu)

Ambae is a long island 40 km and broad of 20, located in the Archipel of Vanuatu by 15,4° of Latitude southern and 167,9° of Longitude is. It is populated approximately 10000 inhabitants.

The closest islands are Maewo and Pentecost with less than 30 km. these three islands belong to the same province, Penama. Espiritu Santo the largest island of the archipelago is to approximately 50 km

The island shelters a Volcan in activity, the Lombenben of which the Mont Manaro, high of 1496 meters is the emerged part. Its last explosion goes back to 1996. There remains sufficiently dangerous (at the beginning of December 2005) to have still recently required the evacuation of part of the population. 5000 displaced persons of the center and the south towards the dimensions north and is following violent projections of ashes reaching 3000 meters height, accompanied by acid rains and gas clouds.

Saratamata is the principal agglomeration of Ambae. it is also the administrative seat of the province of Penama of which the island forms part.

The economic main resources come from agriculture. Tourism is developed little there.
