Amazonian park of Guyana

The Amazonian Parc of Guyana is a National park French protecting part of the Amazon forest located on the territory from the Guyana. Inaccessible since the littoral differently than by plane or Dugout, it extends on 34.000 square kilometers from this Equatorial forest since the publication from the decree from creation to the Official journal the February 27th 2007.

It consists of spaces belonging to the territory of the communes of Camopi, Maripasoula, Papaïchton, Saint-Élie and Saül.

History

In the context of the top of the Earth of Rio in 1992, the project of park was initiated on June 4th, 1992 under the impulse of François Mitterrand, through a Draft-agreement, was signed by the presidents of the assemblies regional and departmental, the Ministers of environment, of Dom-Tom and agriculture and the forests. Thus was born the Mission for Creation from the National park of Guyana in 1993.

A first project dating from at the end of 1995 was rejected in December 1997.

June 21st, 1998, the agreements of Twenké gave place to the recognition of the rights of the Amerindian populations and businengue alive in the enclosure of the future park.

The final project was presented at the beginning of 2006 and on March 13rd, was published in the Official journal the bearing decree taken into account of the creation project of the National park of Guyana called " Amazonian park of Guyane".

The creation of the park was officialized by the decree of February 28th, 2007 in spite of the reserves of various actors of the project (general advice, district council…), and the first board meeting took place on June 7th, 2007.

Organization

The park comprises a heart of 20.000 km ² where protection is maximum and the prohibited Orpaillage. The territory of the Wayana S and Teko S of Maripasoula does not form part of this zone in spite of the request formulated by these Amerindian before the effective creation of the park.
