Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace ( Grace of the Sky in French) is one of the Protestant songs most known. The words were written by John Newton, in 1760 or 1761, and were probably published by Newton and William Cowper in 1779, in the collection of the Olney Hymns .
John Newton (1725-1807) was the captain of a Navire slave trader. May 10th, 1748, on the way of the return, during a storm, he knew a " large délivrance". In its newspaper he wrote that the boat was likely to run. After having survived this storm, it became Pasteur and renonça with the traffic of slaves, at the point to become militant cause free trade.
The melody familiar of this song was not composed by Newton, and the words were initially sung on many other melodies before being définivement coupled with this one. This melody is that of a very old Irish air. According to certain sources, it rather would have been borrowed from the slaves themselves.
Hymn protesting in the beginning, its melody is taken again with other words ( Gloire with you who stays died, Gloire with you Jesus,… ), in the catholic Liturgie, in Anamnèse (Memorial after the dedication).
The success of this Negro spiritual also caused a rebirth of Amazing Grace in the field of the Celtic Musique. It is today one of the airs most played bagpipe, and it was in particular recorded by Royal Irish Rangers or the Bagad de Lann-Bihoué.
