Amato-Kennedy

The law of Amato-Kennedy is adopted by the American Congrès the August 8th 1996 and aims at sanctioning the States hooligans ( Rogue states ) because of their support for international terrorism, of their will to get Armes of massive destruction and their hostility to the peace process with the the Middle East.

It gives to the US president more capacity in the application of economic sanctions and gives him the duty to punish any investment higher than 40 million dollars per annum, than it American, is or not carried out in the energetic sector in Iran and Libya.

In May 1998, the European Union and the the United States arrive to a compromise: in exchange of the commitment of the EU to try to dissuade Iran to acquire weapons of massive destruction, the United States agrees to raise the sanctions taken against the European companies which carried out the kind of investments that the law of Amato-Kennedy aims at punishing.
