Amateur

The word amateur has at least two Connotation S. With the clean direction, an amateur is somebody who likes one or more things, Article One speaks for example about music lover, amateur of horses… It is also a person who carries out a task without being paid, by contrast with a Professionnel which would be paid for same work.

Amateur and professional

In this last direction, to qualify somebody of amateur is often pejorative. For example in Sport, the members of the amateur teams like the Football or the Baseball are regarded as incompetents to compete with the athletes of the professional teams.
