The prince Amanullah is suspected of having killed his father Habibullah in order to seize the power, but certain sources show the British to have organized the murder. It seized the power with the assistance of the army and against the will of his brothers and uncles, and started his reign by the third anglo-Afghan war, that the Afghans regard as their war of independence.

It carried out its country in one decade of development, based on the European model, and created three colleges in foreign language, in particular the Esteqlal college in 1923 (" Esteqlal" mean independence). He even dared to publish a decree prohibiting the marriage of the young girls before the 9 years age.

Finally, its reforms caused a revolt strongly encouraged by the religious leaders (olama), and Amanullah had to flee the country précipitemment.
