The goal of the overfeeding is to increase the power of an atmospheric engine with gasoline or Diesel, without increasing its number of revolutions, and to reduce its fuel consumption. (To increase the power of an engine, one can act on its number of revolutions or its couple).
The increase the number of revolutions of an engine is quickly limited by inertia in the parts moving and the limits in the friction resistance in metals which compose it. One can thus increase the engine torque by the addition of a Turbocompresseur, pump pulled by fumes exhaust and insufflating air under pressure in the cylinders.
It is what one names OVERFEEDING (supercharged engine).
The engine torque depends on the angle formed between the rod and the Vilebrequin, the pressure of gases inside the cylinder and that of the quantity of fuel introduced. When one increases the quantity of fuel introduced into the cylinder, it is also necessary to increase the mass of air proportionally, (combustive) to ensure a complete combustion of this fuel.
The mass of air contained in a given cylinder must be proportional to the pressure and inversely proportional to its absolute temperature. When the air is pressurized, its temperature increases and its density is modified, it is thus advised to install an air-to-air exchanger so as to cool the air and thus to recover an optimal density to be able to obtain the best possible output of this one. It is what one names in English device INTERCOOLER or air-to-air heat exchanger (refroidissemnt or warming of the air admitted in the cylinders of a supercharged engine).
