Am386
The microprocessor Am386 was presented by AMD in 1991. A 100%-compatible clone of the Intel 80386, million units were sold and placed AMD as a legitimate competitor of Intel, rather than as a simple subcontractor of microprocessor X86.
Whereas the Intel version of the 386 culminated to 33 MHz, AMD left a version 40 MHz sound 386DX and 386SX, prolonging the lifespan of architecture. The AMD 386DX-40 was very popular near the small manufacturers of clones PC and of impassioned of data processing without much budget, because the 386DX-40 could reach even slightly to exceed a 486SX-25 in the most popular benchmarks whereas its cost was weak.
More than its more important frequency, this performance was possible because Am386DX-40 made function its Front side drunk at the same frequency as the processor, 40Mhz. Whereas the bus sytème of fastest of the 486 culminated has 33Mhz.
With 40mhz its performances in calculations on the entireties seldom approached the 486 of line entry. The 486 also profit from more important a L1 mask.
The performances could be still improved thanks to the addition of a arithmetic Coprocesseur inexpensive the 80387. However, its performance were far from being that of a 486DX.
