Américo Tomás

Biography

Américo de Deus Rodrigues Tomás , also written Américo Thomaz (November 19th 1894 - September 18th 1987). Admiral and politician Portuguese. Minister for the Navy in 1944. Elected official chair Republic in 1958 (at the time of a faked election), re-elected in 1965 and 1972 (by the Parliament at the time of also faked elections). For this period, Portugal was directed by the authoritarian regime of António de Oliveira Salazar and chair it republic had only one role of figuration. Tomàs used only once its presidential prerogatives: to dislocate Salazar when, in September 1968, following an cerebral vascular accident, it was in the incapacity to control. Tomàs named Marcelo Caetano like Prime Minister to replace Salazar. It then took a role much more active in the government and became the point of rallying of hard mode which found that even the cosmetic reforms of Caetano went too far.

When the Révolution of the Eyelets deposited Caetano the April 25th 1974, Tomás also was reversed and sent in exile to the Brésil until in 1980 where it returned to Portugal.

Contrast between the pompeux style used by the media with the pay of the state ( Its Excellence the President of the Portuguese Republic, Rear-admiral Américo de Deus Thomaz ) and its quasi absence of being able under Salazar made a frequent object of jokes of it.
