Alyx Vance

Alyx Vance is a character of the Série of video game Half-Life which appears in Half-Life 2 and its extension Episode One . It is about an young woman of approximately twenty-five years, girl of Doctor Eli Vance and active member of human resistance against the Cartel.

History

Alyx is the girl of Doctor Eli Vance, a working scientist with Black Mesa. His/her mother, Azian, lived with Alyx in the dormitories of the Research center of Black Mesa but perish during the catastrophe which struck the complex.

Alyx is also very intelligent and works at the sides of three large physicists (his/her father Dr. Eli Vance, Dr. Judith Mossman and Dr. Isaac Kleiner). She has a sharp and dynamic spirit; non-seulement it chooses to be opposed to the Trust but it refuses to be let intimidate by Dr. Mossman. She can often keep her enthusiasm and her direction of humor (this one is developed more in Half-Life 2: Episode One , for example, when she imitates the rail of a Zombi to frighten Gordon or when she makes fun of the soldiers of the Trust zombifiés by crabs of heads by calling them “Zontels”.)

Alyx has an electronic device which uses an electric charge to circumvent the security systems, déverouiller the doors, and, in Episode One , to reprogram them so that they attack the troops of the Trust. She can also fight with firearms and in close combat.

In spite of its kindness, it shows a certain hostility towards Dr. Mossman who treats it top and seems attracted by his father. At the end of Half-Life 2 , this rancour seems to have disappeared once Dr. Mossman helps to release Alyx and his father of the catches of the Dr. Breen.

Alyx seems to develop feelings against Gordon Freeman with the wire of their adventures together. Besides his/her father tackles crûment the subject towards the end of Half-Life 2 Episode 2 by evoking his desire to have grandchildren.

Alyx pronfondément tests compassion for the victims of the Trust. In particular, she feels sorry for a group of stalkers on which Gordons and she fall during Episode One and seems really traumatized after this meeting.

Appearances

Alyx helps Freeman more often and more directly than the other characters of Half-Life 2 . At the beginning of the play, it saves Gordon of the claws of when this one does not have any weapon yet nor combination of protection. Later, with Black Mesa Is, it gives to Gordon the Manipulator Of Energy Field Point-Zero and learns how to him to make use of it. Then, it helps it to find Nova Prospekt to release her father. It fights at the side of Gordon during the rising armed with City 17 and indirectly supports this one during its final combat vis-a-vis Dr. Breen in the Citadelle.

In Black Mesa Is, Alyx disputes with Judith Mossman. Its hostility towards it is obviously justified: Freeman and Alyx learn thereafter that Mossman betrayed resistance and that it is it which delivered the site of their secret base. In spite of that, Mossman is explained at the end of the play and the two women make finally peace.

In the sequence of end of Half-Life 2 , Alyx is with Gordon Freeman at the time when the engine explodes. When the G-Man solidifies time and saves Gordon of the blast of the explosion, Alyx is apparently left with its fate.

Saved by Vortigaunts, which also releases Gordon of the influence of G-Man, it is téléportée with Gordon outside the Citadel. After that, Alyx and Gordons remain together along Episode One until finally escaping from City 17 by taking a train right before the explosion of the Citadel. But still too near to the explosion, the train which transported it with Gordon is taken in the shock wave.

Weapons

Alyx has its own gun (named “weapon_alyxgun” in the files of the play) which it uses most of the time. However, in Episode One , it collects a rifle SPAS 12 which it uses during the crossing of the Hôpital. It uses at another time a rifle of precision to laser aiming (even if it is not seen when it draws following the example gunners from the Trust) and twice uses an assembled machine-gun of the Trust to cover Gordon. In the play, Alyx can absorb a great quantity of damage before dying (more especially as its health is regenerated very quickly).

Anecdotes

the body and the face of Alyx were modelled according to those of Jamil Mullen. At the beginning of Episode One Alyx gains a small scar with the top of its right eyebrow, probably inflicted by the violent one at the end of Half-Life 2 blows and after being left the debris. At the beginning of Episode Two , it is spit by a Hunter and preserves two very conspicuous marks in the back of its jacket.
His/her mother, Azian, can be seen on a photograph with Black Mesa Is and its figure is that of Merle Dandridge, the actress who lends her voice to Alyx in the original version of the play.
