Alvine Seale
Alvin Seale is a American ichtyologist , born in 1871 with Indiana and dead the July 28th 1958 with Corallitos in California.
Biography
It grows in the parental farm, of the parents Quaker S. It makes its first voyage in the Everglades in 1884. Its second travels the conduit of Indiana to California to study there the Poisson S near David Starr Jordan (1851-1931). He is student not very assiduous: instead of going to follow its courses, he prefers outward journey on the ground.In 1896, Jordan chooses it with Norman Bishop Scofield (1869-1958) for a mission with the mouth of the river Mackenzie. In 1898, one of its school-fellows involves it to take part in the gold rush in Klondike but Seale is devoted only to the studies of fauna. With the re-entry 1899, Seale again gives up its studies to become naturalist of ground on behalf of the Muséum Bishop with Honolulu. It makes its first zoological study into 1900 which leads it to Guam, with Manila, with HongKong, Shanghai and the Japan. Until 1903, it makes harvests in Polynésie.
In 1904, it begins again, once more, its studies with the Université Stanford and is finally graduate in 1905, that is to say thirteen years after its first entry. Jordan charges it with studying the possibility of using Cyprinodonte S of Texas to fight against the larvae of mosquitos. It is thanks to the searchs for Seale that Gambusia patruelis will become a tool for fight widely diffused throughout the world.
In 1906, Seale receives the load of a new forwarding in Alaska and it collects specimens for the Alexander Museum of zoology of vertebrate of the University of California. In 1907, it is named expert fishes some near the Filipino government, posts that it will occupy during ten years. In 1917, he becomes the ichtyologist with the Museum off Comparative Zoology with the Université Harvard. Three years later, it takes its retirement close to Santa Cruz in California. Barton Warren Evermann (1853-1932) requests it, in 1921, to off supervise the construction of the Aquarium Steinhart of the California Academy Sciences. It will direct it during twenty years, resigning only at 70 years. In order to supply with fish the aquarium, it makes several voyages: in the Samoa (1929), in the islands Galapagos (1931-1932), with Hawaii (1935 and 1939), Yukon and Alaska (1941). In 1938, two years after the death of its wife, it remarie with Jessie Frapwell. Seale is the author of 162 publications.
