Alvine Cullum York

Alvine Cullum York (1887 - 1964). This native of the Tennessee engages in 1917 in the American Armée and becomes Sergent with the 328ème regiment of infantry, 82ème division.

October 8th, 1918, Forest of Argonne. Alvin York takes the command of its section which underwent heavy losses. Listening to only its courage and with the head of 7 men, it attacks with intrepidity a nest of machine guns whose mortal and continuous fire falls down on its section. At the time of this heroic brilliant deed, it seizes the captive fact, nest of machine guns 4 German officers and 128 soldier and seizes several rifles.

The October 8th 1918, in the forest of Argonne, it captures with him only a battalion of German machine gunners who held a fortified position. On this occasion, it kills 25 enemy soldiers and makes 132 prisoners. This exceptional feat of arms is worth to him to be seen decreeing the Distinguished Service Cross-country race, which will be replaced by the medal of honor of the Congress later, the French, also replaced Military Cross, but by the Légion of honor, and the Military Cross of Italy and the Montenegro.

All the more remarkable exploit for a man who had endorsed the uniform only unwillingly, since it was in the beginning conscientious objector.

Conversation between the SGT York and the Lindsey general ordering division in January 1919 when that they made the turn of the site where York captured 132 Germans.

General Lindsey: `York, how did you do that?'

Alvine York: `My General, it is not of a human nature. It is a power higher than that of the men who guided me and protected and which said to me what it was necessary to make.'

The general inclined the head and put his hands on my shoulder and says solemnly: `York, you are right'.

Alvine York: `It there not the slightest doubt than God is there for something. There is not on ground of power able to leave somebody this situation. On each side of me of the men were killed; and I largest and the most were exposed of all. More than 30 machine-guns concentrated their fire on me with end carrying at a distance of about 25 meters. When God is with you, you leave yourselves there to all the blows. (given by permission by US Douglas Army LTC Mastriano)

" I am pilot that God really helped me to leave unscathed this hard combat; whereas of all shares the grapeshot made rage, I of it am drawn without any égratignure." Alvine York
