Alusuisse

Alusuisse (name carried since 1963 until 1990 by Aluminum Industry Aktien Gesellschaft) was an aluminum first company Swiss of its branch in Europe. It produced especially elements in a hurry and rolled-iron products for trucks and coaches, of the composites, packing for food industry and pharmaceutical as well as rough ingots. It amalgamated with Alcan in 2000.

History

  • In 1887 the Swiss metallurgical Société (Schweizeriche Metallurgishe Gesellschaft) is founded with Zurich by Gustave Naville, Georg Neher, Peter Emil Huber and Paul-Louis-All Saints' day Héroult.
  • In 1888 the Swiss metallurgical Company cooperates with the company Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft to form the Aluminum Industry Aktien Gesellschaft (AIAG). The same year the company sets up its first factory at Neuhausen amndt Rheinfall then at Rheinfelden (1898) and at Lend (1899).

  • Since 1900, the AIAG is interested in the Valais (canton rich in hydro-electric power and where labor was then cheap). It buys thus into 1905 the concessions of water of the Navizence and makes build a factory with Chippis. The company will benefit thereafter from the geographical location of the Valais to increase its electric production by developing power stations with Souste (1911), with Bramois (1914), with Tourtemagne (1924), with Oberems (1926) and with Mörel (1942).

  • In 1929, the AIAG inaugurates the factories of rolling and press of Sierre.

  • In the years 1950, the AIAG builds the factory of Ernen and acquires 30% of the forces of the Barrage of Moiry.

  • In 1962 the AIAG inaugurates the factory of Steg in Valais.

  • In 1963 the AIAG takes the name of Alusuisse (Schweizeriche Aluminum AG, Swiss Aluminum).

  • In 1990 is born the Holding Alusuisse-Lonza Group .

  • In 1997, Alusuisse-Lonza Group employed approximately 31.000 people, including 5800 in Switzerland (turnover: 8873 franc million, clear benefit 466 million), in three divisions: packing (Lawson Mardon), aluminum (Alusuisse) and chemistry (Lonza).

  • In 1998 Alusuisse-Lonza Group takes the name of Algroup .

  • In 2000 Algroup amalgamates with Alcan. Company name becomes Alcan Aluminum Valais SA.

  • In 2005 the Automoblie sector of the group of the flat-rolled products is detached from Alcan to become Novelis .
