Altes Museum

The Altes Museum (called the royal museum until in 1845) is a Musée with Berlin, located on the island at the Museums.

The building

The neo-classic building was built between 1823 and 1828 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In 1830, it opened are the doors. The rotunda refers to the the Pantheon of Rome. Towards the end of the Second world war, Altes Museum burned almost entirely. After the restoration, to leave 1966, it presented the contemporary art of the German Democratic republic. For a new restoration, the museum will close its doors in 2009.

The collection

Altes Museum was initially built to lodge the artistic collection of the royal family of Prussia. The collection of works of Antiquity was recovered in 1998 of a provisional shelter in Charlottenburg. In this moment, the collection of the Ägyptisches Museum of Berlin is shown there.
