Alternatives is a Governmental organization of solidarity and international expansion founded in Montreal in 1994.

Alternatives works for justice and equity in the relations between the individuals and the communities in North as in the South. It is active in more than 35 countries of the world, where it supports the initiatives of the Community in favor of the respect of economic rights, social and political movements, of the people and the communities touched by poverty, discrimination, the exploitation and violence.

Alternatives in the world

Alternatives is present in Latin America, in Africa, in Europe, in the Middle East, in Central Asia, South Asia and South Asia East.

In each one of these areas, Alternatives works in narrow partnership with the groups of women and men who decided to take the initiative of progress, the respect, justice, peace and sustainable development in their community, their environment, their area.

Alternatives supports the setting in network of these groups so that they profit from the experiments and the successes from/to each other. This setting in network is paramount, because it allows the development of an analysis and an adequate comprehension of the evils which affect the communities, but of which the origin their is external.

The projects of international solidarity of Alternatives and its partners concentrate on:

  • environment and sustainable development;

  • the development of the democracy;

  • the rehabilitation of communities affected by the war;

  • good governance;

  • justice and social and economic equity;

  • civic rights, political, economic, social and human;

  • the fight against poverty;

  • the women's rights, the equality and equity enters the kinds, the inclusion of the women to all the spheres of the company;

  • the education and the inclusion of the young people;

  • the development of the civil society, the good management and the autonomy of the communities;

  • the freedom of organization, information, press, opinion and worship.

Programmes of training course for the young people

Alternatives also organizes each year of the training courses youth abroad. Question of developing in the young men and young women their direction of solidarity and their curiosity with respect to the other areas of the world and their population. These training courses put the emphase on the comprehension of realities of the Third World countries and encourage the action in order to advance the message of justice which animates Alternatives. Tens of young people thus have the chance every year to live track records, cultural and human without similar.

Alternatives to Quebec and Canada

Alternatives they is also several conferences, a newspaper, Internet sites and heaps of other activities of education, mobilization and information.

The Alternatives newspaper is a monthly magazine distributed to 50.000 specimens, which offers information different on the international topicality, main road and cultural.

In Quebec and Canada, Alternatives intervenes at the same time on the files with international characters and buildings. Through a work of information and sensitizing, we try to influence the international policies of the governments Canadian and Québécois. So that they reflect our concerns of respect, equity and justice with the countries of the South, whether it is in economic terms, cultural or political. Locally, we are committed in particular on the relative files with the environment and the participative democracy, the reception of the immigrants and the industrial relations policies of the governments of Quebec and Canada.

Financing

Roughly 50% of the funds of the organization come from the governments (mainly the Canadian Agency of international expansion). The remainder is collected near 50.000 supporters and of partners groups which join the mission Alternatives, such of the Churches and trade unions.

In Canada, 50.000 individuals support Alternatives by gifts financially, while becoming member or subscriber of the Alternatives newspaper.

Several Québécois, Canadian and international personalities support Alternatives. Among those, one can count:

  • Francoise David, leading of Québec Solidaire and ex-president of the Federation of the women of Quebec (FFQ), initiator of the world Walk of the women

  • Asmaa Jangir, of the Commission of the rights of the person of Pakistan
