Altenbeken is located in Egge, an assembly line limiting the Plains of Münster in the east.

Altenbeken has limits - starting in the south in the direction of the needles of a watch - with the towns of Lichtenau (Westphalia), Paderborn and Bad Lippspringe (district of Paderborn), of Horn-Bad Meinberg (district of Lippe), of Steinheim and Bad Driburg (district of Höxter).

The three districts of Altenbeken are Altenbeken, Buke and Schwaney.

The station of Altenbeken is a rail junction. Thus Altenbeken is a commune of the railwaymen and the large viaduct is the emblem of the commune.

Altenbeken is twinned with Betton close to Rennes in France.
