AltaVista

AltaVista (literally “seen of in top”) is a Search engine World Wide Web. It was put on line at the Adresse Web altavista.digital.com in December 1995 by researchers of Digital Equipment Corporation.
In 1998, Compaq repurchased DIGITAL, transformed AltaVista into gate, repurchased the altavista.com field at the company AltaVista Technology for 3,3 million dollars, then made a company separated in 1999.
It was the first search engine with to index a good part of the existing Web pages and became immediately very popular. It was also the first multilingual search engine (the French version was open on February 15th, 2000), like with launching the search of images, audio files and vidéos.
At the beginning of the Years 2000, following the loss of quality of the results, with the preference brought to a strategy gate with the detriment of research and finally with the success of Google, the popularity of AltaVista declined gradually, to end up finding itself on the level of an unspecified search engine.
There remains used and proposes some clean functions as research on root (Example “jeune* infirmi*” will make seek the pages comprising young male nurse , young nurse , young male nurses and young nurses in only one interrogation).
In 2003, Overture repurchased AltaVista. In 2004, Yahoo! repurchased Overture. Following this acquisition, AltaVista uses from now on the index of Yahoo!.

One should not confuse AltaVista with Astalavista, site of Warez which had at one time its hour of glory.
