Biography

Alhonse is the son junior by Raymond IV (VI), born from his third wife, Elvire de Castille. It was born in front of Tripoli in 1103 and was baptized in water of the the Jordan, from where the name of Alphonse the Jordan . It succeeded his brother Bertrand († 1112).

Brought back to Occident, whereas it is very young, it is high in the oriental party of its States (county of Saint-Gilles, marquisat of Provence, Beaucaire and ground of Argence), while Toulouse are occupied between 1114 and 1119 by Guillaume IX, count de Poitiers and duke of Aquitaine.

In 1120 conflict with the count of Provence Raymond-Béranger Ier, it besieged in Orange, it is delivered by the Toulouse militia which goes to its help, forces the lifting of the seat and brings back the young count to Toulouse. A treaty signed in 1125 grants to him the territories in the north of the low Durance and the castles of Beaucaire and Valabrègues on Right Bank of the Rhone.

In 1144, it founds Montauban, the first country house.

Alphonse the Jordan granted in 1141 then 1147 of the communal franknesses to the town of Toulouse.

He turns over in Holy Land where he dies (assassinated), his son Raymond V (VII) succeeds to him.
