Alphonse d\' Ornano
Alphonse (Alfonso Gieronimo) of Ornano , born in 1548 with Bastelica in Corse-du-Sud and died in 1610 with Bordeaux, is a Marshal of France which was distinguished in particular during the wars of religion. He was the son of Sampiero da Bastelica (1498-1567) known as Sampiero Corso , captain then colonel with the service of Henri II, and Vannina d' Ornano (1516-1563).
Wars in Corsica
Alphonse d' Ornano passes his youth to France, with his Vannina mother. In 1566, it arrives in Corsica to help his father in his combat against Génois. This one appoints it colonel and general captain of his cavalry. In 1567, it is with his father when this one falls into an ambush set-up by Génois with complicity from the one from its lieutenants, Vittolo, whose name will be a long time honni in Corsica, synonymous with traitor, under the keen rejoined Corsican blows and of the cousins of his Vannina wife, that it assassinated in 1563 whereas she was on the point of gaining Genoa with most of marital fortune.Eighteen years old, Alfonso d' Ornano - it had taken the name of his mother - takes again the fight during two years after being proclaimed chief. The countryside turns short. Alfonso seeks the means of negotiating a peace with Genoa and of being withdrawn in France with his/her companions. Thanks to the intermediary of the France, it leaves the Corsica definitively in 1569 with three hundred faithful to serve the Crown.
Career in France
Alphonse d' Ornano is established in the kingdom where it obtains naturalization and faculty for all the Corsicans eager to fix themselves at it to remain in France. In 1574, its stronghold is restored to him by Génois. It receives Senate of Genoa the authorization raising a thousand of men in the island; it puts this regiment at the service of France.
It Marie on June 2nd, 1576 with Marseilles with Marguerite Louise de Pontevès, of the family of the counts de Carcès. From this union were to be born seven children.
Become colonel, Alphonse d' Ornano is named Gouverneur Aix-en-Provence in 1578 then, with died of Maugiron, general lieutenant for the king in the province of the Dauphiné (1589). At the beginning of the war of the League, there belong to the very rare officers to remain faithful to Henri III. With died of the king, it fights during the disorders of the League in Lyonnais and Dauphiné (1588-1598) against the Ligue and the duke of Savoy.
For its actions, it is high in 1595 with the dignity of Marshal of France by Henri IV; then it is made knight of the Holy Spirit on January 5th, 1597. It is then named lieutenant of the king in Guyenne following the marshal of Matignon (1599).
He is elected mayor of Bordeaux. In 1604, it is illustrated in this city during its fight against the Peste.
He dies in Bordeaux, in 1610, reached Gangrène.
