Alphonse X of Castille

Alphonse X Wise the or the Scientist (in Spanish, Alfonso X el Sabio ) (Tolède, 1221 - Seville, 1284)

It was wire of Ferdinand III (1199-1252), king de Castille (1217-1252) and of León (1230-1252) and Béatrice de Souabe (girl of Philippe de Souabe, king of the Romans (1198-1208).

It also carried, of 1247 with 1273, during one of the interregnums of the Saint Germanic Roman Empire the title of King of the Romans, without never being crowned emperor.

His/her oldest son Ferdinand of Cerda having died prematurely in 1275, it was constrained to bequeath his Couronne of Castille to his second wire Sanche IV the Brave man (which had however been revolts some against his father), and that with the detriment of the rights of wire of Ferdinand.

Alphonse X was a personality highly érudite which made work with Tolède of the scientists and translators Juif S, Christian and Musulman S on the following subjects:

  • Plays, with El libro of will ajedrez, dados E counted (" The book of the failures, dice and tables"), richly illustrated;
  • Poetry and music, with the Cantigas de Santa Maria written in Galician and richly illustrated, to which it contributed;
  • Fables, with the translation under the name of Calila E Dimna of the collection of Arab fables Kalîla wa Dimna, itself resulting from the Indian Panchatantra.
