Alphonse Ier , born in 1456 and died in 1542 or 1543 ( Afonso Ier in Portuguese, and Mbemba has Mzinga Ndo Funsu in Kikongo), wire of the first King converted with the Christianisme, Mpanzu has Muzinga , was king of the people Kongo between 1505 and 1507.
Impressed by the modernity of the Portuguese following the visit in 1489 of an embassy of the kingdom of the Kongo to the king of the Portugal and the establishment of missionary S Franciscain S in 1490, it undertook to christianize the kingdom. He asked the king of Portugal to send more missionaries as well as craftsmen with an aim of modernizing his people. He was the first African king recognized in Europe. Its initiative of christianization of Kongo announces the beginning of the decline of the kingdom. The Esclavagisme became extensive and it could not fight it since it lost capacity vis-a-vis the vassal or provinces which benefitted economically from the draft. Moreover much of the Portuguese craftsmen or missionaries are reflected to practice this trade.
