Alphonse II of Provence

Alphonse II Berenger , born towards 1180, died in Palermo in February 1209, was count de Provence of 1196 with 1209 and count de Forcalquier in 1209. It was wire of Alphonse II, king d' Aragon, count de Barcelone, of Roussillon and Provence, and Sancie de Castille.

It succeeded his father towards the fifteen years age, under the supervision of his uncle Sanche. In July 1193, its father and the count de Forcalquier Guillaume IV had concluded the treaty from Aix by which Alphonse II was to marry Garsende de Sabran, grand-daughter and heiress of the count de Forcalquier. As of the death of the king Alphonse II, Guillaume sent an army to plunder the area of Aix and Maria his other grand-daughter with the dolphin Guigues VI of Burgundy (1202). The Catalans of Provence occupied Sisteron then and obliged Guillaume to respect the terms of the treaty. There were other clashes, and the two counts died the same year. Gersende controlled in the name of his/her son Raimond Bérenger IV, then made donation of the county of Forcalquier to his/her son become major, thus joining together the two counties.

Of his Gersande wife, whom he had married with Aix-en-Provence in July 1193, he had had:

  • Raimond Berenger IV (1198 † 1245), count de Provence and of Forcalquier
  • Garsende, married to Guillaume II of Moncade, Viscount of Béarn
