Alphonse II of Asturies

Alphonse II of Asturies (760 - 842) known as the Pure one, King of Asturies of 791 with 842.

Wire of Fruela {{Ier}} and Munia. It was born with Oviedo. It was dealt with by his aunt Adosinda when his/her father died. He exerted the governorship of the palate at the time of the reign of Silo. With died of Silo, thanks to the support of his aunt and large of the court, it was selected to be a king. In spite of that, his/her uncle Mauregat succeeds in exerting a strong opposition and depositing Alphonse who took refuge with Alava (where its maternal family resided). Mauregato was followed of Bermude Ier. When this one renonça with the throne due to its rout to the Battle of Burbia, Alphonse returned from Asturies and was proclaimed king the September 14th 791.

It is known that Alphonse II had contacts with the court of Charlemagne (from which the territory extended until north from the current Spain. At least three delegations were sent to the court of the Francs into 796,797 and 798.

Alphonse II took Lisbon with the Moslems into 798 and overcame them with Nalón and Anceo (825). Thanks to its victories, it consolidated its position in Galicia, León and Castille, repopulating them. It installed its court with Oviedo, where it made build a palate as various churches (of which there remain only ruins of the church of San Tirso). In the suburbs of the city, it built the church of Santullano.

History local said that he died in 842 “after having carried during 52 years and in a pure way, sober, immaculate, pious and glorious the government of the kingdom”. The tradition says that under its reign was discovered fall it from the Saint-Jacob apostle by a hermit to Compostelle in 814. Alphonse II was the first pilgrim of the famous pilgrimage.
