Alphonse-Louis of Plessis de Richelieu

Alphonse Louis of Plessis de Richelieu , (Paris, 1582 - Lyon, March 23rd 1653), is the older brother of Armand Jean of Plessis, more known under the name of the cardinal of Richelieu.

Biography

It is with him that was given dice its childhood the évèché of Luçon, but he refused to be devoted and dislocated his load in favor of sound brother. He then withdrew at the Chartreux in 1605. On the insistence of the cardinal of Richelieu, it was named archbishop of Aix-en-Provence, the December 6th 1625, then was archbishop of Lyon, in September 1628. It was named cardinal, on November 19th 1629, then Grand chaplain of France in 1631. He died in Lyon in 1653 of Hydropisie.

The brother of the large Cardinal was a good man and well. He made great lasting change its evêché with Aix and his cardinalat in Lyon. Its behavior during the great plague of Lyon was heroic. Its only known defect was the chocolate, which it took against “the vapors of spleen and bad mood. ”

It will remain inconsolable loss of his brother in 1642. Just like Armand of Plessis, Cardinal of Richelieu, Alphonse was large vice-chancellor of the Sorbonne following his junior. Its merit was recognized. Forgotten by the history, he was however a large ambassador from France to Rome. But its kindness and its modesty will erase it vis-a-vis the genius of his/her brother. ----
