Alphabetical transcription of the languages Maya

Since the Spanish conquest at the 16th century, there was a series of systems of Maya transcription of the languages . They had the principal disadvantage not to be uniform. During last years, the Mayas themselves conceived a system of transcription in Latin alphabet which is employed more and more by the mayanists (specialists in the Maya Civilization). In 1989, the Ministry for the culture and Sports of the Guatemala recognized it and published “ Acerca of los alfabetos para to escribir los idiomas Maya of Guatemala ” of Margarita López Raquec like official document of reference.

Some simple points:

  • an apostrophe (') behind a consonant indicates that this one decides by closing the glottis
  • the letter decides * the letter corresponds to French * the letters decide * the letter corresponds to the " jota" Spanish
  • a simple vowel is short, a double vowel is long
