Armorial bearings
The current weapons of the city are derived from older weapons. The seals of the city of 13th and 14th centuries were composed of a knight carrying a sword in a hand and the banner of the Comté of Flanders in the other. The first representation of the current weapons goes back to 1557. Their Blasonnement is: of money, with the sword of mouths in stake, the point in top, accompanied as a Dextral chief by an escutcheon by the Empire and as a Sinistral chief by an escutcheon by Flanders; who are: 1 of gold, with the eagle éployée with two heads of sand, languée, beakful and membrée of mouths. 2: of gold, with the sand lion, armed and lampassé of mouths. The sword points out the knight, the two escutcheons recall that Alost belongs at the same time to the Comté of Flanders and with the Holy roman Empire. These weapons were officially granted in 1819 and were confirmed in 1841.
