Almaty
Almaty ( Алматы : apples) is the main city of the Kazakhstan, with more than 1,1 million inhabitants. Old name Alma-ATA ( Алма-ата ) meant “Grandpère- Pomme”, because there are important orchards in the surroundings.
Origin
The Russian fort Zailiysky was founded in 1854 with the foot of the assembly line Tian Shan and famous the following year Verny , a name which it kept until in 1921. In the Years 1920, the railway line between the Siberia and the Turkestan Turksib was completed and the city became a big step.
In 1929, Almaty became the capital of the Soviet socialist République kazakhe, then in 1991 that of the country resulting from the implosion of the Soviet Union. The December 21st 1991, the leaders of eleven of the Soviet republics sign in Almaty the death certificate of the USSR. In 1998, the Capitale is transferred to Astana, with more than 1.200 kilometers in the north of Almaty.

The city is located from 650 to 950 m of altitude.
Sports
The Olympic station of winter sports Medeo, which include/understand a gigantic skating rink, is in the vicinity. Built for the training of the Soviet athletes, it is today one of the favorite gathering places of the inhabitants of Almaty.
Almaty was candidate city for the organization of the Winter Olympics of 2014.
