Gaston Ramon , born with Bellechaume (Yonne, France), the September 30th 1886 and died in Paris the June 8th 1963, is a French veterinary surgeon and biologist.

Biography

  • 1906 - 1910: Raise National school veterinary surgeon d' Alfort which it leaves graduate in 1910.

  • 1911 - 1920: Its schoolmaster of Alfort presents it to Emile Roux which assigns it in the capacity as Vétérinaire to the service of production of the Sérum S, with the Appendix of Garches of the Institut Pasteur. He works there under the direction of the veterinary surgeon A. Prévôt. It is charged to immunize very many horses and to collect serums antitetanus, anti-diphtheric and antigangréneux, intended for the treatment of these diseases.
  • 1915 : Emile Roux requires of him to find a disinfectant clean to ensure, under conditions of war, a good conservation of the immunosérums (the serums suffer from microbial contaminations due to harvest, the setting out of bottles and in the bad transport conditions). Its choice will appear excellent: formol. The same year it improves its bacteriological technique in the laboratory of Mr. Nicole.
  • 1917 : Marry Marthe Momont, small-niece of Emile Roux.
  • 1920: Obtains Emile Roux and L. Martin, the authorization to install a small laboratory close to its housing of the Appendix of Garches (Pasteur Institute).
  • 1921 : A process purification of the antitoxic serums develops which will make the serum accidents less frequent and less severe.
  • 1922 : During experiments undertaken on the diphteric poison, Gaston Ramon observes the formation of a precipitation within a diphteric mixture of toxin and his antitoxin. He notices that this flocculation is shown all the more intense as the mixture of toxin and antitoxin were mutually saturated. This observation is used as a basis for the method of proportioning per flocculation which makes it possible to titrate in vitro the diphteric antitoxin what, before, could be done only by the test in vivo, on experimental animals.
  • 1923 : Show that the diphteric toxin which underwent the simultaneous action of an minor amount of formol and heat, is transformed into an inoffensive derivative but which preserves intact its vaccinating capacity. Gaston Ramon gives him the diphteric name of anatoxine. After some tests, vaccination by the diphteric anatoxine enters in practice. To the same time, it indicates that, according to identical principles, the tetanic toxin can, it also, tetanic being transformed into anatoxine.
  • 1924 : Show that starting from venoms can be obtained anavenins.
  • 1925 : Found the principle of the auxiliary and stimulative substances of immunity, technique which makes it possible to obtain serums richer in antitoxins by uniting with the vaccine an irritating substance for fabrics.
  • 1925-1926: Applies the tetanic anatoxine to the prevention of tetanus, in the pets with P. Descombey, the man with CH. Zoeller.
  • 1926 : Found with CH. Zoeller method of associated vaccinations. It consists in using a mixed vaccine made up of a microbial vaccine associated with one or two anatoxines. Several immunizations in only one injection are thus carried out. This technique is at the base of the design of the vaccine diphteria-tetanus.
  • 1929 - 1934: In collaboration with R. Debré, carries out biological research and immunological concerning the diphteria and the scarlet fever.
  • 1926 - 1944: Named directing of the Appendix of Garches of the Pasteur Institute, after the death of A. Prévôt.
  • 1932 : Install, with the Appendix of Garches, the scientific service of cinematography of J. Comandon.
  • 1934 : Elected official member of the Academy of medicine. Price decreed by the Academy: Clotilde Liard (1924).
  • 1934 - 1940: Succeed A. Calmette at the post of sub-manager of the Institute Pasteur (Paris), whereas L. Martin becomes the director about it.
  • 1937 -1940 : Is charged to coordinate the whole of the services ensuring the production of the serums and the anatoxines. Between 1939 and 1940, the Institute provides seven million amounts of serums and vaccines for the armies.
  • December 5th 1940: Director of the Institute Pasteur (Paris) is named. A. Boivin and NR. Bernard become sub-managers. The financial reforms and administrative that it wishes to see applying to the Pasteur Institute being refused by the Board of directors, it resigns. It is J. Tréfouël which succeeds to him.
  • 1941 : Honorary director of the Pasteur Institute is named and becomes the chief of the grouping of Immunologie services and seat for this reason at the Scientific advice.
  • 1943 : Free elected official member of the Academy of Science, Paris. Prices decreed by this academy: Bréant (1925), General Muteau (1937).
  • 1944: Leave the direction of the Appendix of Garches, replaced by ED. Lemétayer.
  • 1947 : Appointed research director of the National institute of hygiene.
  • 1948 : Leave its functions at the Pasteur Institute to become director of the international Office of epizooties, in Paris.
  • 1959 : Takes its retirement.
  • May 3rd 1962: The sword of academician gives to R. Debré, at the time of a ceremony organized in the international Center of childhood (Co), in the presence of several personalities of which L. Rajchman.
