Alliance of the democrats and the liberals for Europe

The Alliance of the democrats and the liberals for Europe ( ADLE , or in English, ALDE ) is the name of a parliamentary Groupe with the the European Parliament, created the July 14th 2004, which joins together the European Parti the reforming liberals, democrats and (ELDR, liberal) and the European Democratic party (PDE, center). Moreover, the European deputies independent who adherent with the liberal or center values and wish to contribute to promote them were also invited to join group ADLE.

Chaired by the British liberal Graham Watson, it counts 88 appointed since the elections of 2004, which makes the 3rd group in the European Parliament of it and allows him to exert a determining influence in the decisions of the EP which exceeds its numerical force by far.

Pat Cox, former president of Group ADLE and former president of the European Parliament is also one of the important personalities of the party.

Political family

The ADLE gathers at the same time the liberal European members of Parliament of the ELDR and the center European members of Parliament of the PDE. These two families find themselves on a certain number of subjects (federalism, defense of the minorities, culture of the dialog) but divergent on others (economic doctrines, security questions).

Declaration of creation

With Brussels, the July 14th 2004:

“the Group of the Alliance of the Democrats and the Liberals for Europe was born” " Graham Watson announced, which was elected the President of the new Group by a vast majority. At the sides of Francois Bayrou, President of UDF, and Paolo Costa (the Margherita, Italy), Mr. Watson announced the formation of the new group which counts 88 deputies of 19 States and presented the program of Group ADLE in ten points. Francesco Rutelli, President of Margherita, expressed its support for Bronislaw Geremek in a video message.

Mr. Watson, who was elected President of new Group ADLE to a vast majority, declared:

“I am proud to announce to you that the new Group of the Alliance of the Democrats and the Liberals for Europe was formally constituted yesterday evening and that I have the honor to chair this Group. Yesterday, the deputies of old Group ELDR linked themselves with the deputies of the UDF of Margherita to create a new pro-European group in the center of the European Parliament. ”

“With the foundation of Group ADLE, we gathered 88 deputies resulting from the democratic and liberal traditions. In addition to the deputies of the old ELDR, of UDF and Margherita, we are very satisfied to count in our rows five deputies of the Parti Work with Lithuania, two Italian radical deputies (of the Italian Radical party), Gerard Deprez (reforming Mouvement /BE) and Jose Ortuondo (Parti nationalist Basque /ES). Like thought we it, the creation of this new Group created a dynamics which already attracted others of them, and we hope that other deputies will join us during this legislature. We invite all those which share our values and which are disappointed their groups to join us.”
