Alleys

Venelles is a common French, located in the department of the Rhone delta and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is called Venellois.

Geography

With équidistance of Marseilles (39 km) and Manosque (39km), Venelles is a crossroads between the first alpine buttresses and the basin inhabitant of Aix. The village is visible with far by its masonries, buildings and its old houses coupled and fixed on the hill. Equipped with a strategic relief and a panorama, low, one sees Lubéron, the Holy Victoire and even Holy the Balsam and the solid masses of Marseilles without problem on the esplanade of the village created in 2002.

History

The history of the village goes back to 400 av. J.C during civilization Celto-Ligurian of Salyens. Towards 123 av. J.C the Romans occupy the village and settle. In 574, the area is assiégeé by Lombards and of VIIIe at the 10th century, Buckwheats devastate in their turn the area.

But from 970, the calm one and prosperity return. At the 11th century, 2 churches cohabit; " Velenna-Nova" with the field St Hyppolyte and " Velenna-Vetula". Its geographical location (on the road between Aix-en-Provence and Luberon) encourages its expansion (traffic of transport of wood). But it is at the 15th century that the grounds exploited in vines start to become populated. In XVIe, the farmers are installed and planted on the slopes of the village, the vines, corn, the olive-trees and the almond trees. In 1540, Venelles counts 7 houses. In 1820, the number is assembled to 211 dwellings and 833 villagers. The village, built on a hill extends downwards.

In 1865, Venelles knows an economic advancement and demographic without precedent thanks to the Mayor Felix Chabaud (creation of a gendarmerie squad, laying on water, construction of the station on the line " Marseilles-Grenoble" , etc). June 11th, 1909, a very violent earthquake shakes the village. The church and several houses are destroyed. The new church will be built with Alleys-the-low like, thereafter, all the important buildings.

Today Venelles is in full sporting rise with very good performances in volleyball and tennis shoe. Alleys is also one of the places exploited by the festival Off and Back (festival of lyric art around Jacques Offenbach) in summer.
