Summary

Baudelaire are three children about like the others:

Violet, 14 years, with the scientific intelligence, which invents all the possible objects with all and anything;
Klaus, 12 years, insatiable reader, " a dictionary ambulant" , which devoured in 12 years more books than the majority of the people at the end of their life;
Prunille, the small last, which bites all that passes and which has a language with it well.

All starts on the beach of Malamer where Violette, Klaus and Prunille Baudelaire spent the afternoon. The arrival of a mysterious character worries the children. In fact, it is Mr Poe, illustrates banking in charge of the fortune of the Baudelaire family. The children had a bad presentiment. And indeed, Mr Poe comes to announce the sad following news to them: a fire devastated their superb residence of the cellar to the attic and killed their parents.

Placed under the temporary guard of the Count Olaf, supposedly a " near parent" , they are treated like slaves. This one has only one idea at the head: to touch the immense fortune of Baudelaire. In this infamous world, the children find a lucky star: the neighbor of the count, Abbot judge.
