Alioune Diop

Alioune Diop (1910 - 1980) was an intellectual Senegal board who played a leading role in the emancipation of the African cultures, melting in particular the review African Présence .

Years of training

Alioune Diop was born with Saint-Louis on January 10th in 1910. Musulman, it attends the Koranic school, but his/her maternal aunts initiate it with the reading of the Bible. It passes its baccalaureat in 1931 and, thanks to a purse, it studies the traditional Letters, initially at the University of Algiers, then with that of Paris. These various cultural approaches contributed certainly to forge humanism and the open-minded that one knew to him.

It makes also the experiment of several community activities, in turn teacher, civil servant of AOF and even briefly parliamentary. However it is especially through its talents of cultural worker, organizer, federator whom it finds his way.

In 1947 it founds the review African Présence of which it proposes the title.

In 1956 it organizes with the Sorbonne the Congrès of the writers and black artists which will bring together the black intellectuals of many countries, supported by writers and artists of the whole world, and militant for the emancipation of the African cultures, and in favor of the Décolonisation.

With independences which follow one another quickly, Alioune Diop will organize with Léopold Sédar Senghor the first world Festival of negro Arts in 1966 with Dakar, in a independent Senegal from now on, which will be also the occasion of the first commemoration of the memory of the Esclavage in the world and the place of the first questions on repair.

Posterity

He dies on May 2nd 1980 at age the 70 years and Léopold Sédar Senghor pays a vibrating homage to him, indicating it like a “black Socrate”, more anxious to be confined the others than to produce an ambitious personal work.

A price of African edition Alioune-Diop was created in 1995 by the International organization of the francophonie. It is decreed every two years with the International exhibition of the book and the didactic material of Dakar (FILDAK).

The widow of Alioune Diop, Yandé Christiane Diop, took the changing within the review, at the sides of a Director of the publication.
