Alice Domon

Alice Domon , French nun , missing during the military dictatorship in Argentinian (1976 - 83).

Biography

Alice Domon was born the September 23rd 1937 with Charquemont, Doubs. She enters the orders in 1957 in the congregation of the Sisters of the Foreign missions of Notre-Dame of the Mound.

She begins her mission of nun in Argentine in 1967 while dealing initially with handicapped children under the name of Sœur Caty. In 1977, she lives in a Bidonville of Buenos Aires where she supports the combat of the Mères of the Place of May. She sought with them the missings victims of the dictatorship of Videla while striking with all the doors: courts, police stations, ministries. According to the organizations of the human rights, nearly 30.000 people disappeared during this military dictatorship (from March 24th, 1976 to December 10th, 1983).

Alice Domon is removed on December 8th 1977 in the church of Santa-Cruz with Buenos Aires with 11 other members of the movement of the Mères of the Place of May. Two days later, Léonie Duquet, another French nun originating in the Doubs, is removed at it, in Ramos Mejia (southern suburbs of Buenos Aires). They are then interned at the Mechanical School of the Navy (ESMA), the greatest Argentinian center of Torture. The network had been in fact infiltrated by the captain Alfredo Astiz, said the " Fair angel of Mort". Tortured during approximately 10 days (they were seen still alive on December 13rd in the camp of retention of ESMA), they were then thrown, anaesthetized, in water of Rio of Plata (supposed date: December 18th, 1977).

Contrary to Léonie Duquet, the body of Alice forever found Domon. The Astiz ex-captain was condemned in France by contumacy, 1990, to the prison with perpetuity for the removal and the murder of these two nuns.

The town hall of Paris decided into 2005 to allot the name of a street to Alice Domon and Léonie Duquet. This street is located in XIIIe district.
