Alice Coltrane
Alice Coltrane , (born Alice MacLeod on August 27th 1937 with Strait and dead the January 12th 2007 with Los Angeles), is a Harpiste, Pianiste, Organiste, American compositrice of Jazz .
Biography
Alice Coltrane was born with Detroit in 1937, and receives a formation of classical music. She takes courses of piano with Bud Powell.
One of the rare female instrumentalists in the jazz, it was also (with Dorothy Ashby) one of some harpists. She occurred with beginning of the year 60 with Terry Gibbs, appearing on one of her recordings. Thereafter it replaced McCoy Tyner as a pianist of the group of Coltrane in 1966. She marries John Coltrane in 1965.
The work of John Coltrane was to him undoubtedly an important source of inspiration, but it then developed its own style on the piano, the organ, the toothing-stone, and later, the instruments Indian such as the Tamboura. After the death of John Coltrane, it starts has to record under its own name. She often collaborated with Pharoah Sanders.
As from the Seventies, its music dyes Hindu religious influences.
She one was impassioned of Swami Satchidananda, and adopted the Hindu name of Turiya thereafter. In 1975 it formed the center of Vedanta in California like centers for its spiritual activities. In the Eighties and Nineties, it makes a certain number of recordings of sacred music, little diffused.
In 1998, it emerges from its retirement of the jazz to play two concerts with New York. In 2004, pushed by his/her Delighted son , it records a new disc after 26 years of silence discographic.
