Alice is the first feature-length film of the Czech multiform artist Jan Svankmajer. It is composed of filmic images and images of animation, and gained the title Meilleur cartoon film to the Festival of Annecy of 1989.

Jan Svankmajer delivers to us through this film an alarming vision of the book of Lewis Carroll, intermingling surrealist objects, fantastic visions and stories out of drawers…

Synopsis

In the room of the young Alice, a empaillé white rabbit awakes, prepares, seizes its scissors and escapes from its prison of glass to disappear in a drawer. Alice leaves to her continuation and finds it in its den, which consults its watch and eats sawdust, this one escaping unceasingly from its seams defeats. Pressed and frightened by Alice, it escapes and this one falls into a hole which, being transformed into elevator, brings it in a part filled with died sheets, not having that only one door, locked, one second old opening, tiny.

The rabbit and the sheets disappear, aspired by the drawer of a piece of furniture in which she discovers a small key, then intervene ink making it reduce in the shape of a porcelain headstock and the cakes allowing him to grow. After several tests it cracks and explodes in sobs, flooding the part. A rat finds refuge on its cranium where it tries to make to a fire then rabbit reappears on board a boat. It lets escape its scissors and its dish from cakes while missing running up against Alice.

She finds the large key and reaches outside, the white rabbit confuses it with certain “a Marianne” and sends it to seek another scissors in its house, left castle in blocks of constructions. After having drunk ink it is found trapped in the room. The rabbit calls reinforcements and one fits with body arrives, transporting several strange and hybrid animals. Bill the lizard does not manage to dislodge Alice who reduces and escapes but is finally pushed in a milk bowl where it grows while remaining a “headstock”, surrounded by a gangue, of a cocoon to its effigy of which it is released to be found locked up in a narrow part filled with preserves, in one of which it finds the key of her cell.

It meets then kinds of moles socks, then the silkworm, sock having ocular spheres and denture offering to him a piece on each side of its mushroom before falling asleep again. Attracted by the cries of a baby, she is confronted with the lackey fish and to fish splashes, the first being carrying an invitation of the queen. Then it launches out to the continuation of the baby, proving to be a pig.
