Algirdas Brazauskas
Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas born the September 22nd 1932 is the President of 1993 with 1998 and Prime Minister of the République of Lithuania of 2001 with 2006.
Biography
It was born with Rokiškis, in independent Lithuania, close to the Latvian border and finishes its studies of Civil engineering, option Hydrotechnique, at the Polytechnic Institute of Kaunas in 1956. It follows then a traditional career of apparatchik within the Soviet socialist Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Communist party.
Of 1965 with 1967 he is Secretary of State to construction materials of the RSS of Lithuania, then vice-president of the Committee of planning and finally starting from 1977 Brazauskas reaches the very political post of secretary of the central committee of the Communist party of Lithuania.
In 1988, Algirdas Brazauskas is elected first secretary of the Communist party of Lithuania, it is the most influential character of the RSS of Lithuania (after the members of the central committee of the the USSR located at Moscow).
At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, Brazauskas supports the independence movement and transforms the Communist party into Democratic Lithuanian Party of Work (PLDT) or Lietuvos Demokratinės Darbo Partijos (LDDP) in lituanien.
Following the parliamentary elections of the October 25th 1992, Brazauskas is elected president of the Lithuanian Parliament ( Seimas ) and it is for this reason that it finds the Presidency the November 25th 1992 while waiting for that the station lately creates by the Constitution finds a holder elected. He is elected by the vote for all the February 25th 1993 with 60% of the voices vis-a-vis Stasys Lozoraitis.
In 1998 Brazauskas decides not to be represented without to leave the political life. Valdas Adamkus succeeds to him the February 25th 1998 with the palate of Évèque ( Rūmų ).
The July 3rd 2001, it is named at the post of Prime Minister by President Adamkus.
The October 10th 2004 it loses the elections gained by the Workers party (DP) of Viktor Uspaskich. It nevertheless is renewed like Prime Minister with the head of a coalition including/understanding its social democrat Party, the Workers party, the Social-liberals and the Union of the peasants and the New democracy. But the coalition loses the in April 2006 majority with the departure of the Social-liberals. The withdrawal of the members of the Labor Party a few weeks later causes the advertisement of its next resignation, the May 31st 2006. The resignation having become effective, on June 1st, the Minister for Finance, Zigmantas Balčytis, replace it in a provisional way until the June 15th but, after the rejection of Balčytis by the Parlement, it is the Minister for the Defense Gediminas Kirkilas which replaces Brazauskas in a final way starting from the July 6th.
