Algerian presidential election of 1995

The presidential election of the November 16th 1995 is the pluralist first presidential election in Algérie. It is held in full period of terrorism at the time of the Algerian Civil war. It is the president of the High committee of State (HCE), the general Liamine Zeroual who is elected with 61,34% of the voices.

Context

Algeria sank in violence following the interruption of the legislative elections of December 1991 which saw the Islamic front of the Hello carrying more of the 2/3 of the seats at the assembly. The president Chadli Bendjedid is thorough with the resignation in January 1992 and to see itself replacing by Mohamed Boudiaf with the head of the High committee of State (HCE). Boudiaf assassinated in June 1992 is replaced with the head of the HCE by Ali Kafi which will remain there until in June 1994 before yielding the place to the one of the 5 members of the HCE, Liamine Zeroual. In January 1995 several opposition parties sign with Rome a claims platform which receives a certain echo what will oblige Liamine Zeroual to announce the organization of presidential elections for November 1995.

Comments

The delegations of observer of the the Arab League, the African Union and the the United Nations did not observe any main issue. The Islamic Groupe armed had death threat the voters, but the election proceeded with few violences. Three principal of the the elections preceding ones (Islamic front of the hello, Face of national release and Face of the Socialist forces) having called with the abstention.
