Algajola

Algajola (the J decides as a I ) is small a common balneal of Haute-Corse, near to Island-Russet-red the, in Balagne.

Geography

Integrated into the canton of Belgodère (and not into those of Calvi or Island-Russet-red the, as its geographical location should put at it), it belongs to the district of Calvi. It was a small fishing port, with a fort on the sea, which was competed with by the close cities. The sinners (craftsmen) disappeared almost and reconverted themselves into tourism.

Only one inhabitant hundred the winter in the the Eighties, Algajola saw in a few years its population doubling whereas its territory is more modest (census: 216 h.), with thousands of residents in summer, tourists Italian, north-Europeans and French. The beach of Aregno, located near on a close commune of the interior, borders the city and is covered with Posidonie S in winter, from where perhaps, the name of the commune (small alga) but it is undoubtedly a popular etymology. In the the Sixties, it counted only 80 h. Its dispute electoral is famous and was the subject of many court orders. Its current mayor is Mr. Maurice Pariggi, reprocessed Public office, near to the Radical left party (he was 31e on the list " For Corsica in République" with the territorial elections 2004, list Zuccarelli Alfonsi).

History

With the site of an old city phenician (Argha), it was an old residence of the governor génois, dependant on Calvi. It was taken and ransacked by the Othomans in 1643. Genoa made it strengthen in 1664.

Along the trunk road, one can always observe a spectacular barrel Monolithe of more than 270 tons, in porphyry, abandoned in a career in 1837. It was to be used like support of a monumental statue as Napoleon i which set up forever. The base of the Colonne Vendôme with Paris is out of porphyry of Algajola.
