Alfred Wahl

Alfred Wahl , born in 1938 with Colmar, is a historian French specialist in the contemporary Germany. In addition to his work on Germany, this professor of the Université of Metz opened the access to his students with studies relating to the Sport and the Football in particular. He signed several calls to research in these fields forsaken by the French historians. “The field was unexplored whereas many had been interested in the diseases, with died with the hollows. I found that inadmissible and striking”.

Footballer of good level during his youth, Alfred Wahl chooses career of historian finally. He becomes professor with the college of Haguenau before being appointed lecturer at the Robert-Schuman University of Strasbourg. He leaves his native Alsace in 1980 to become professor at the University of Metz until in 1993 (professor emeritus after this date) with two specialities: Germany of the 20th century and football.

It publishes several reference books on the football of which the ball with the foot. History of football at Gallimard in 1990 which is translated into several languages. He is requested by Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, to belong to the editorial board of a work assessment over the centenary of the federation: FIFA 1904-2004, one century of football, at Seek-Midday in 2004. This editorial board was composed of two French, Alfred Wahl and Pierre Lanfranchi, of an English, Tony Mason, and of Allemande, Christiane Eisenberg. The FIFA leaves them free their writings, but Wahl concedes however a certain self-censorship: “Autonomy was total, even if that did not prevent a kind of self-censorship implicit.”.
