Alfred Robaut

Alfred Robaut (born with Douai in 1830, died with Fontenay-sous-Bois in 1909) is especially known as the author of the first catalog of works of Delacroix and Corot, painters to which it dedicated a great admiration.

Biography

After short studies Alfred enters the printing works of his/her father to Douai. In 1853 it takes again printing works and marries the oldest daughter of Constant Dutilleux, itself painter and friend of Delacroix and Corot. Draftsman and engraver, Alfred Robaut devotes itself especially to the engraving of reproduction. He is also historian of art and publishes many articles.

From the Years 1860, Robaut is devoted to the reproduction in facsimile of drawings and autographs of Delacroix. It piles up testimonys and documents on the life and the work of Corot and makes photograph by his brother-in-law Charles Desavary a great number of its works.

In 1870, Corot settles at his place in Douai and painted there the Belfry of Douai (museum of Louvre)

Etienne Black-Nélaton will complete the work of drafting of the reasoned catalog of works of Corot.
