Alfred Pellan
Alfred Pellan (May 16th 1906, Quebec, Quebec - October 31st 1988, Laval, Quebec) was a painter, a Illustrateur and a Costumier Québécois. He is the first Québécois painter to be itself illustrated on the French scene, in 1935. Twenty years later, following an exposure to Paris, its work will be recognized in Quebec and the Canada.
Biography
It makes its studies with the École of the fine arts of Quebec of 1920 with 1925.In 1926, it obtains the first grant in arts of Quebec, which him allows to remain several years with Paris. Its greater blow of this time will be to gain the first price with the exposure of mural art of 1935.
The Second world war obliges it to turn over to the Quebec in 1940, where it settles with Montreal. It brings back works which will be praised in exposures in Quebec and Montreal. Art surrealist cubist and that it brings back with him is however regarded as too avant-gardist, consequently it will sell little of it. From 1943 to 1952, to survive, he teaches with the École of the fine arts of Montreal. Its active opposition to the theoretical bases of the principal pushes this last to be resigned in 1945. The school consequently becomes more liberal in its approach.
During the Years 1940, it illustrates collections of Poésie and designs costumes and decorations for the Théâtre. Its style of maturity also develops for this period. Surrealism attracts it more and more: its imagery becomes more erotic and its paintings, with the colors always seizing, become larger, more complex and more textured. Not believing in the schools of art, it forms Prisme of Eyes in 1948, a regrouping which claims a free art of any ideology.
In 1952, it receives a purse of the royal Société of Canada and goes back to Paris until 1955. This year, he becomes the first Canadian to present an individual exposure to the National museum of modern art. Its reputation being established near the Canadian experts, it produces various exposures and receives orders the mural ones. They establish its fame in the worldwide.
Several Monograph S and Documentaire S is devoted to him.
