Alfred P. Sloan

Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr. (May 23rd 1875 - February 17th 1966), was leading American and president of General Motors during nearly 30 years.

Biography

Born with New Haven in the Connecticut, he studied electric engineering and was graduate Massachusetts Institute off Technology (MIT) in 1892.

He became president of a factory of ball bearings in 1899. In 1916, its company amalgamated with United Motors Corporation which thereafter became a subsidiary company of General Motors of which he became vice-president, then president (1923) and finally Chairman off the Board (1937). In 1934, it created the philanthropic foundation Alfred P. Sloan . GM under its direction became famous for various tools for piloting of company using the financial Statistiques like the Return on investment. These measurements were introduced at GM by Donaldson Brown.

With the credit of Sloan, the installation of changes of style each year from where the concept of planned obsolescence is resulting . It also set up a price structure which (of low at the most price), the marks Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac did not enter in competition between them and in order to return " captif" a purchaser within the family of marks GM as her purchasing power increased or that its preferences changed with the age. These concepts, vis-a-vis the resistance of Ford to the change in the Years 1920, propelled GM to like n°1 of the industrial sales to the beginning of the year 1930, a position which it will maintain until the end of the 20th century. Under the direction of Sloan, GM will become largest and the most advantageous industrial company in the world.

During its mandate with the head of GM, much of Tramway S for the public transport in the United States were replaced by buses. Many of these trams were burned to prevent any return to this means of joint transport in the future urban policies. Some think that GM ordered this destruction. The frequencies of the buses dropped on the least profitable ways pushing the Americans to buy their own vehicle and to travel in an independent way.

In the years 1930, General Motors, a long time hostile with the Trade union S, was confronted with its workmen, recently organized and ready to obtain laws the labor. Sloan was hostile with violence as practiced by Henry Ford. He preferred the subtle use of espionage and he builds the best secret network ever created in a company. But when the workers organized a massive strike posted in 1936, Sloan found that espionage had only one low value in front of such a trade-union tactic.

A pioneer of management

The first university program for managers - the Sloan Fellows - was created in 1931 with the MIT under the sponsorship of Sloan. A subsidy of the Sloan Foundation created off the MIT School Industrial Management in 1952 with an aim of forming the " to manage idéal" and the school was re-elected in the honor of Alfred Sloan the Alfred P. Sloan School off Management , one of best the current world Business school S. A second financing created the Sloan Fellows Program with the Stanford Graduate School off Business in 1957. The program became the Stanford Sloan Master' S Program in 1976, delivering the diploma of Master off Science in Management .

Sloan took its retirement of the station of Chairman the April 2nd 1956 and died 10 years later in 1966.
