Alfred Nzo

Alfred Baphethuxolo Nzo (1925 - 2000) is in 1994, the first black, Minister for the business foreign of South Africa.

Born with Benoni with the Transvaal, in a family of 5 children, wire of minor, it began studies at the university for blacks of Fort Hare in the the Cape Province where it became a militant policy of ANC.

Inspector of health, it is established in the Township of Alexandra close to Johannesburg and takes an active part in the Fifties in all the demonstrations anti Apartheid.

Become a framework of the ANC, it loses its employment and becomes militant full-time. Not having more work and thus of documents in proof to live in Alexandra, it is stopped on several occasions

In 1964, it manages to be extracted from South Africa to join the movement in exile where it represented the ANC of Egypt to the India while passing by the Zambia and the Tanzania.

In 1969, it is elected general secretary of the ANC and is re-elected in 1985.

With beginning of the year 90, it belongs to the delegation who negotiates with the government of Frederik de Klerk.

In 1991, it is not re-elected general secretary of the ANC and must leave the place to Cyril Ramaphosa.

In 1994, it succeeds Roelof " Pik" Botha at the prestigious post of Foreign Minister in the government of national union of Nelson Mandela.

In 1999, it does not take part in the new government of Thabo Mbeki.

Alfred Nzo died the January 13rd 2000 with the private clinic Olivedale de Randburg close to Johannesburg.

Alfred Nzo District

Its name was given to one the municipal districts poorest of the country in the province of the Cape-Eastern . Named " Alfred Nzo District" , it gathers the local municipalities of Umzimvubu and Umzimkhulu for a population of 555 thousand people including 76% unemployed.
