Alfred Day Hershey (December 4th 1908 - May 22nd 1997) was a microbiologist and American geneticist. It obtains the Nobel Prize of medicine in 1969, with El Salvador Luria and max Delbrück.
Alfred Hershey was born with Owosso, in the Michigan, it is graduate in chemistry of the university of the state of Michigan in 1930 and obtains its Doctorat in Bactériologie in 1934, and is named little time after at the department of bacteriology of Universtité Washington to St Louis.
It then starts to carry out experiment S on the bacteriophages with Italian-American the El Salvador Luria and German max Delbrück in 1940, and they realize that when two lines different of Bactériophage infect same the Bactérie, the two viruses (bacteriophages) exchanged genetic information.
It settles in 1950 at the laboratory of Cold Spring Harbor, in New York to off join the department of genetics of the Carnegie Institution Washington, where it sets up a famous experiment: The Experiment of Hershey and Chase, with Martha Chase in 1952. This experiment proved definitively that in fact the Protéine S are the genetic data carrier, but well DNA. He becomes director of the Carnegie Institution in 1962 and receives the Nobel Prize medicine in 1969, divided with Luria and Delbrück for their discovery on the replication of the viruses and their genetic structure. ex will cathedra manner made him the pope, off sensitive race, and Luria was the hardware-working, socially priest-confessor.
