Alfred Dodds
Alfred Amédée Dodds , born with Saint-Louis of Senegal on February 6th, 1842 and died in Paris on July 18th, 1922, is a creole French general, commander higher of the French troops than Senegal as from 1890.
In 1892-1894, this creole general carried out the conquest of the Dahomey (current Bénin) on Béhanzin 1st. Near to the French radicals, Alfred Dodds had his nomination as chief of forwarding with the personal intervention of Clemenceau, nomination which involved the resignation of the Minister for the Navy Godefroy Cavaignac.
Biography
Left Saint-Cyr military school in 1862, he is lieutenant of Marines in 1867. In post office with the Meeting, it is distinguished during the riots from 1868.Become captain in December 1869, it is distinguished during the war from 1870 with Bazeilles and it is made knight of the Légion of honor. He escapes after the capitulation from Sedan and joined the armed with the Loire then that with the East. He is interned in Suisse at the end of the war.
He is in station with the Senegal of 1871 to 1878, then in Cochinchine of 1878 to 1879. Major in Senegal in 1879, it takes part in the operations of the Casamance between 1879 and 1883. Lieutenant colonel in 1883, it takes part in the operations in the delta of the Tonkin. Colonel in 1887, it pacifies the Fouta Djalon in Guinea. He is made commander of the Legion of honor in 1891. He takes the command of the 8th colonial one with Toulon, then he is named commander higher than the Bénin in 1892 and directs the countryside of Dahomey.
Brigadier general in 1892, inspector of the troops of navy and large Officer of the Legion of Honor, it receives in 1895 the higher command of the troops in Indo-China.
It is Major general in 1899. Of 1903 with 1907, he is higher commander of the troops of marine. He is member of the Superior council of the war, Grand Cross of the Legion of honor, Military decoration (1907).
