Alexis III Angel

Alexis III Angel , Byzantine emperor (1195-1203), died in 1210 wire of Andronic Angel and Euphrosyne Kastamonides.

It reverses his brother Isaac II, imprisons it and makes him burst the eyes. Its reign is a succession of riots and conspiracies, which complete to ruin the empire. Whole areas of the empire are lost, their governors taking their independence. Of a weak nature, Alexis could not stop irremediable weakening of the empire and with the fact that it is not summarized any more but with Constantinople.

Shortly after its advent, and in order to face the tribute required by the Germanic Emperor Henri, it instituted a special tax which it supplemented by tearing off all the invaluable ornaments of the imperial tombs of the church of the Saint-Apostles.

In 1204, Constantinople was victim of the Fourth crusade, directed by the Republic of Venice, which had been convinced by Alexis IV, the son of Issac II, to reverse Alexis III. After the creation of the Latin empire, he flees in Thrace, where he outlines a resistance, then passes in minor Asia. He poses problems with his son-in-law Theodore Ier Lascaris, who was made crown emperor of Nicée in 1208. Theodore imprisons it then, and it remains in prison until its death.
