Alexandros Papanastasiou
Alexandros Papanastasiou (in Greek modern: Αλέξανδρος Παπαναστασίου ) was a politician and a Greek Prime Minister born the July 8th 1876 in Levide, in Arcadie and died in Athens on November 17th, 1936.
Biography
He studies the right to the National university capodistrienne of Athens, then the right and the philosophy with the Université Humboldt of Berlin and with the Université of Heidelberg.Of return in Greece, it engages in policy. He becomes the leader of a group called the “sociologists”, young intellectuals rather on the left. He is the principal introducer of the Marxisme in Greece, mainly of the idea of the mode of production like ultimate determinant of the social organization and the shape of government. A plebiscite approves the abolition of monarchy the April 13rd 1924. It is during its mandate, that is founded the Université of Thessalonique and that is recognized the use of the modern Greek demotic.
He becomes Ministre for agriculture, the first in the history of Greece, in the “oecumenical” government of Alexandros Zaimis (1926-1928). Become chief of the “agrarian and working” party, Papanastasiou creates an agricultural Bank to support the credit with the peasants and a section of agronomy at the University of Thessalonique.
Papanastasiou is briefly Prime Minister one second time from May to June 1932. It takes part with other partisans of Vénizelos in the coup d'etat missed of March 1st, 1935. This coup d'etat precipitates the dictatorship of Ioánnis Metaxás. Condemned to several years of prison, it is quickly grâcié. In April 1936, he refuses, with Georges Papandréou, to vote confidence with the Métaxas government. He is assigned with residence.
Papanastasiou dies of an heart attack the November 17th 1936.
