Alexandria ( Alessandria in Italian) is a Italian city, fortified town during the Renaissance, located in the area of the Piedmont in the Plaine of the Po, which is today the capital of the province éponyme.

The city is located at the edge of the Tanaro, with approximately 75 kilometers in the south-east of Turin.

Alessandria constitutes important a rail junction.

History

Also named Alexandria of the Straw , this city was built with haste out of wood and thatch, 1168, by the Ligue lombarde to be opposed to Frederic Barberousse, and accepted the name of Alexandria in the honor of the pope Alexandre III, which reigned then. Frederic called it by derision Alexandria of the Straw , name which remained to him.

It was yielded in 1707 by Joseph Ier to the Savoy. It belonged to the French of 1796 with 1814 and was the chief town of the department of Marengo.
