Alexandre of Sommerard

Alexandre Of Sommerard , French archeologist, born with Bar-sur-Aube in 1779, died in Paris in 1842.

It was to advise with the Court of Auditors. Full with admiration for the architecture of the the Middle Ages, it conceived the project early to preserve the memory of an art from which the traces disappeared the every day: it to this end went to be established in the Hôtel of Cluny (Rue of Mathurins), Gothic palate that of Amboise, had made build at the end of the 15th century, and there created a " museum of national antiquities " who, to his death, was won over by the French State.

One owes him:

  • of the Notes on the hotel of Cluny and the palate of the Thermal baths , 1834;
  • on the Arts with the Middle Ages (in-fol. and 5 volumes of text, 1842 - 1846), capital work, to which he worked until his death.
