Alexandre of Rhodos
Alexandre of Rhodos , born in Avignon the March 15th 1591, dead the November 5th 1660 with Ispahan, is a priest Jesuit with whom one owes the systematization of the Quốc ngữ , the romanized writing of the Vietnamese .
Biography
Wire of Bernardin of Rhodos, lawyer, and of Jeanne de Tolède, Alexandre of Rhodos is allowed like beginner of the Society of Jesus in 1612; it chooses to be devoted to the evangelization. In 1624, it is sent to the Kingdom of Annam, but goes initially in Cochinchine, then with the Tonkin, where it converts several thousands of people. He learns the Vietnamese and, on the basis of work of missionary S Portuguese and Spanish S, develops a romanized writing of this language, until written there in characters Chinese. Its objective is obviously to allow a better penetration of the religious texts Christian. It also writes some works on the history of the Tonkin and a dictionary annamite-Portuguese-Latin.
In 1630, nevertheless, persecutions anti-Christian women force it to leave the country. It receives then the authorization of évangéliser the Perse, where it dies in 1660.
